The Po’ouli was a mysterious and unique bird only discovered in the 1970s in the dense wet rainforests on Maui. By 2006, the species was extinct. What happened in between is a complex story of habitat destruction, invasive species and the slow recovery efforts by conservationists hampered by funding challenges and internal conflicts of how to best save this species.
