Luther (Guitar Junior) Johnson with Special Guests

Time:
Wednesday, July 2, 2008 - 7:00pm
Description:

The West Side guitar style, a way of playing alternating singing single-note leads with powerful distorted chords, was created mostly by Magic Sam and Otis Rush. This style grew into an important contribution to modern blues and rock, influencing such notables as Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler.

Johnson served a long sideman apprenticeship with both Magic Sam and Muddy Waters, while developing into a strong performer in his own right. Today, Luther is widely considered the foremost proponent of the West Side guitar style and the heir apparent to the late Magic Sam’s West Side throne.

Always cool, and nobody's fool. Rickie Lee Jones rocks, rolls, swings, and strolls like a New Orleans second line. The music is raw and immediate, and her lyrics share what’s on her mind with a brash insight and daring that often poses the questions we all want to ask. Born in Chicago, Jones is a two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist, musician, songwriter, and producer. Through a career that spans the course of three-decades, Rickie Lee has brewed up a stiff cocktail of R&B, blues, pop, soul, and even jazz standards. A first for the Boston area, she and her band will be doing a three week Thursday residency.

River City BluesFest - New Orleans jazz and blues singer Samirah Evans and Her Blues Band

Time:
Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 7:00pm
Description:
Evans has often been compared to Etta James, and legendary jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan has said, "Samirah's artistry is as spectacular as her personality…she's magic…everyone should hear her." Evans moved from New Orleans to Brattleboro, VT in the fall of 2006 following Hurricane Katrina. She began her career as a jazz and blues vocalist in New Orleans in the 1990s, playing French Quarter clubs with pianist Willie Metcalf, whose early students included such modern jazz luminaries as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, and Donald Harrison, Jr. Since that time she has performed regularly at the premier jazz venues in the Crescent City and has also made 14 appearances at the famed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as both a leader and featured vocalist.
