Blue Horizon Jazz Band

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 7:00pm

Stan McDonald's Blue Horizon Jazz Band introduced classic jazz to the Sherborn Inn. Unlike many "Dixieland" bands, the Blue Horizon blends the unaffected spontaneity of early New Orleans jazz with a variety of tightly arranged passages and solos spanning the classic periods of American traditional jazz music to early swing. Band members Stan McDonald, soprano sax and clarinet, Jeff Stout trumpet, Gerry Gagnon trombone, Eric Baldwin guitar,Ross Petot piano, Al Ehrenfreid string bass, Dave Bragdon drums – whose ages span five decades – dig to the roots of jazz and present a varied and succulent musical repast, fulfilling their motto: The Future of the Music with a Past. Reservations, please.

Tao Drummers Beat a Path to Jorgensen

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 7:30pm

Athletic bodies and contemporary costumes meet explosive traditional taiko drumming and innovative choreography on the Jorgensen stage. “Tao: The Martial Art of Drumming” has critics waxing lyrical about the group’s extraordinary precision, energy, and stamina. Time Out calls the show “powerful, dynamic and unique,” and the Chicago Tribune says the performers are “extraordinarily talented …[with] incomparable muscular zeal” as they bring a non-traditional flair to the heritage of Japanese drumming.

At a compound in the mountains of Japan the members of Tao live and engage in incredibly intensive study of physical strength, mental discipline and skill development before reaching the highest level of virtuosity. However, each of these performers brings a nontraditional flair to the group by drawing on their diverse backgrounds: one as a hard rock musician, another as a gymnast, and yet another as a composer. They offer a young and vibrantly modern take on a traditional art form.

Tickets are $25, $27 and $30, with some discounts available. Call the Box Office, Monday through Friday, 11 am to 5 pm, at 860.486.4226, or order online at jorgensen.uconn.edu. Enjoy free, convenient parking across the street in the North Garage.

Wee Trio with Dan Loomis

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - 8:00pm

This is what the critics say about 'Wee Trio':

Downbeat “The Wee Trio often veers from the expected...questioning the rules of jazz orthodoxy. They keep the music substantive and riddled with direction surprises. Definitely a group to watch. ”

Peter Margasak Downbeat All About Jazz “’Lightning in a bottle’” is an excellent metaphor for The Wee Trio's Capitol DinerVol. 1 , given how the music crackles like high-tension wires in a rainstorm.” “grabs the listener by the lapels and yanks hard.”

J Hunter All About Jazz "Catch the lightning and check out this very hot NYC band".
