Swing Times Five
Submitted by edshepherd on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 2:00pm.
Ross Petot (piano) is one of the gems of the local music scene, and when he plays from his book of favorites, he really shines. Jeff Hughes (cornet, flugel) joins in the celebration, supported by simpatico players Justin Meyer (string bass), Dan Weiner (guitar) and Dave Didriksen (drums).
Their repertoire explores diverse corners of the American songbook, with lots of Ellington, Strayhorn, Gershwin, Porter, Kern, and Arlen, including many seldom-heard numbers. Come for a swinging evening of relaxation and reminiscence.

FEATURING: Sheryl Bailey - Guitar, Ian Froman - Drums, Brian Charette - Organ.
Guitarist Sheryl Bailey is rated among the foremost bopbased guitarists to have emerged in the 1990’s. Her attack can be direct and hard swinging, but she also exudes subtlety, elegance of phrase and a pure, warm, liquid sound. Bill Milkowski has written about her: “ a modernist burner with an abundance of Pat Martino-style chops, Bailey prefers angular lines, odd harmonies and the occasional touch of dissonance as she sails up and down the fretboard with fluid abandon.” – JazzTimes Magazine, Februrary 2005

Heather Waters fuses elements of bluegrass, stone country and the singer-songwriter genre into a brew that is at once a timeless evocation of indigenous American music and the distinctive expression of a singular artist. Her unforgettable voice seems to rise out of the American soil, melancholy yet resilient, immediate yet timeless. In her songs, she's Dylan's sad-eyed lady of the lowlands come to life. Waters grew up on the outskirts of Chicago, the daughter of a steelworker and a corrections officer. Her parents always had a steady stream of Outlaw Country playing in the house. Their spitfire daughter had an epiphany during her junior year of college after a chance jam session with Buddy Guy. She immediately set out for Boston , where she cut her teeth opening for such esteemed artists as Queen Ida, Toni Lynn Washington, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, Tim O'Brien, and Darrell Scott.
Mandolinist,Jimmy Ryan has electrified the Boston music scene with his fusion of bluegrass pickin' and driving edge rock for more than a decade. His unique flair is energizing, with fingers flying across the frets like lightning through a stormy sky, leaving his audience spellbound. His music; a blended perfection of rootsy rock, bluegrass and world music, whose influences range from Bill Monroe to Bob Marley. Over the years Jimmy has teamed up with an impressive array of local talent in ensemble settings, creating his own style of alt-country that compliments every one of his musical cohorts.
