Eguie Castrillo & His Orchestra

Friday, May 2, 2008 - 7:30pm

FEATURING: Tim Mayer, Janous Kowarsky, Daryl Lowery, Bob Bowlby, Nir Naaman - saxes, Marcos Lopez & Marcos Torres - Percussion, Uziel Colon - Piano, Alex Albear - Bass, Angel Subero, Chris Gagney, & Robyn Amy - Trombones, John Repogly, Greg Hopkins- Trumpets &  Manolo Mairena - Singer.

While Castrillo has made a good living playing congas, his first love remains the timbales. It had been his dream since 1989 to be a timbalero leading a large ensemble playing mambos, cha-chas, and rumbas in a salute to the 1950s Palladium era in New York. "When Tito Puente passed away in 2000, I went to the funeral, stood by his casket, and made a promise that I would try to carry on the tradition he started. I want to bring the mambo back with some new touches."

While Castrillo feels that Puente left big shoes to fill, he wants to do what he can to keep the music alive. "I want to continue passing on knowledge and stories to my audience for them to do the same thing".

Angela Masciale & Howie Newman

Friday, May 2, 2008 - 7:30pm

Angela Masciale has a hauntingly beautiful voice, folk-classical in sound, with a three octave range. Her soulful original songs are composed of exquisite melodies, woven with mellifluous, poetic and stirring lyrics. Her joy of singing and playing the guitar fills the room as she passionately showers her listeners with an uplifting spirit, delivering her message with a voice that soars over all. Angela plays both classical and acoustic guitar, delivering harmonious, often complex finger-picking guitar accompaniment to her singing.

Howie Newman has opened for Tom Paxton, Vance Gilbert, Bill Staines, Lui Collins, Don White, Modern Man and many others. His songs have received national airplay on the Dr. Demento Show, National Public Radio and Midnight Special as well as dozens of other outlets across North America. Two of his songs ("AstroTurf" and "Doug Mientkiewicz") have been included in baseball compilations produced by Hungry for Music, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that raises money and provides instruments for underprivileged youth.

Monica Hatch with Pamela Hines on Piano

Friday, May 2, 2008 - 7:30pm

Having studied voice with one of America's great sopranos, Eleanor Steber, song stylist Monica Hatch is one of the very few who managed to have a successful career as both a classical and jazz singer. With her classical background, Hatch not only brings a technically advanced set of vocal chords to her jazz work, but an appreciation of the lyrics of the material she sings. She conveys a sense of warmth in her interpretations never letting her naturally strong voice overwhelm the material.

Of Pamela Hines -  April 28, 2007 edition of Midwest Record Recap: " Straight ahead jazz isn't a dirty word, in the right hands it's a wonderful thing that sounds good and feels nice... Whether delivering chestnuts or originals, Hines is right there, on point playing the clean, bold lines that make you take notice that let you concentrate on the fire with being distracted by false pyrotechnics.

Amazing Theater Company Presents: The Cemetery Club

This lively and poignant comedy about love and survival illuminates the relationships, humor, and feelings of three close friends who meet at the cemetery each month to pay their respects to their late husbands. Each of the widows is at a different stage of healing and moving on with her life. The flamboyant Lucille – whose husband was unfaithful – flirts outrageously, as if to avenge herself. The quieter Doris is content to remember her husband. Ida is beginning to think she’s ready for a second chance at love. But Lucille and Doris aren’t ready for her to take that chance. How the friends resolve this conflict is funny, touching, and thought-provoking.

Audra McDonald

Friday, May 2, 2008 - 8:00pm
Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 8:00pm

Technical perfection, pure tone, crystal clear diction – 4-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald is one of the most electrifying performers on Broadway today. Frequently compared to legendary performers such as Barbara Streisand and Judy Garland, McDonald was just nominated for yet another Tony for her luminous portrayal of “Lizzie’ in 110 in the Shade. She also plays Dr. Naomi Bennett in "Private Practice" on TV. Equally talented as a singer and a dramatic actress, she is “one of those rare cabaret concert performers who sends writers running for their thesaurus in search of new ways to say ‘astonishing’” (EDGE Boston).

James McMurtry - Ray Mason

Friday, May 2, 2008 - 9:45pm

James McMurtry is the quintessential American folk music singer-songwriter. His father, novelist Larry McMurtry, gave him his first guitar at age seven. His mother, an English professor, taught him how to play it: "My mother taught me three chords and the rest I just stole as I went along. I learned everything by ear or by watching people.

Ray Mason is often called the Godfather of the New England music scene. He, and his road-worn 1965 Silvertone guitar, have been tirelessly touring since 1982. Averaging over 140 shows a year, he's like a teenager with thirty-plus years of experience! Throughout the years Ray has opened shows for NRBQ, The Band, Marshall Crenshaw, Bill Morrissey, Graham Parker, They Might Be Giants, Nils Lofgren, Warren Zevon, Joan Osborne, Freed Johnston, Joan Jett, Blue Mountain and more. Ray's tunes follow no trend while keeping an upward slide on the songwriting scale. It's rock with the roll! Kick back and enjoy!!
