Joe Flood

Saturday, May 24, 2008 - 8:00pm

Playing a variety of stringed instruments, Joe Flood delivers original material in what Karen Schoemer in the New York Times called "a gravelly voice that perfectly straddles the fence between country and the blues." His songs inhabit a place where folk and blues roots meet the craft of Tin Pan Alley and the soul of the street. They have been covered by artists as diverse as the New Orleans style jazz band The Flying Neutruinos and Alt Country Chanteuse Laura Cantrell. His individual style has made him a favored co-writer of Levon Helm of the legendary group The Band as well as producer/guitarist Eric "Roscoe" Ambel.

Zili Misik

Saturday, May 24, 2008 - 9:00pm

Zili Misik has been bridging cultures, generations, and continents for seven years. With captivating sounds that evoke the African continent, Zili retraces routes of forced exile and cultural resistance through diasporic rhythm and song. Powerful Haitian, Brazilian and West African rhythms infuse Zili's original creations and traditional folksongs. Reconnecting Haitian mizik rasin, Jamaican roots reggae, Afro-Brazilian samba, Afro-Cuban son, and African American spirituals, blues, jazz and neo soul, Zili Misik honors its influences while creating a sound that is uniquely its own.

All female, zili takes its name from Haitian spiritual entity, "Ezili" who is envisaged as mother, lover, and warrior. Zili's songs are sensual, political, self-reflective, positive, and invoke love. Zili's lyrics glide seamlessly from English to Kreyol to Portuguese to Spanish, spinning tales and visions of lives lived and yet to be.

Sofia Koutsovitis belongs to a new generation of musicians who imaginatively explore the connection between jazz and contemporary music and the rich musical traditions of South America. An active vocalist, composer and arranger, her primary musical project to date, the Sofia Koutsovitis Group, is grounded in traditional South American rhythms that merge organically with sophisticated harmonies and exploratory improvisations. Singing in Spanish, Portuguese or English, Sofia's voice is alternately graceful and authoritative in interpreting her dynamic original compositions or her own innovative arrangements of pieces by Latin American composers such as Silvio Rodriguez, Astor Piazolla, Paulinho da Viola, and Chabuca Granda.
