Tribute to Duke Ellington - The Greg Hopkins Quintet

Event Date:
Wednesday, May 22, 2013 - 8:00pm

The Beehive presents a tribute to legendary composer, pianist and big band leader Duke Ellington with an evening of live performance featuring some of his most iconic work. Join The Beehive as internationally known composer and musician Greg Hopkins takes the stage to honor one of the most legendary musicians of all time.

Arguably the greatest composer to ever live, Duke Ellington was much more than that. Best known for his big band songs such as “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” and “Rose Room,” the legendary composer filled the world with tunes in a genre of their own, and of which he called “American Music.” An equally notable, pianist and big band leader, Ellington continued to rock the stage despite the decline of big band popularity during his time. After devoting his life to groundbreaking music, Ellington won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1966.

To honor the timeless music of this epic composer, Greg Hopkins will take the Beehive stage from 8:00pm-12:00am and fill the room with guests’ Ellington favorites.

Hopkins began playing the trumpet at a young age. Growing up in Detroit, he spent most of his time practicing his trumpet and throwing himself into the intricacies of jazz music. Beginning his career in the Detroit area as a freelance musician, Hopkins eventually moved to Boston where he has been a Professor at Berklee School of Music since 1974. Hopkins has performed with big name jazz musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Dizzy Gillespie, and Gladys Knight. He has also been an arranger and jazz trumpeter with Billy Maxted and Buddy Rich orchestras.

Join The Beehive for this celebration of the most iconic jazz and big band musician of all time!
