Free Carillon Concert in the Old Chapel building

Carillonneur Gerald Martindale will give a free concert on the UMass Amherst carillon. The repertoire includes popular songs such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Music of the Night and Richard Rodgers’ Edelweiss, “light” classics Andante and Air from Orfeo by Gluck and Minuets I and II by J.S. Bach, songs from Great Britain and Holland, well-known hymns by Handel and Croft, James Angell’s Fugue for Bells, and compositions for the carillon.

Martindale has made five carillon concert tours of Europe and 13 tours of the United States. In 1997 he was appointed Carillonneur of the historic Metropolitan United Church in Toronto, Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts, University of Windsor; an Associate Diploma in Organ (Teacher’s), Royal Conservatory of Music; an Associate Diploma, Royal Canadian College of Organists, and an Associate Carillonneur Certificate, Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.

The concert is sponsored by the UMass Amherst Department of Music and Dance.The concert takes place in the Old Chapel building; the music will also be heard throughout the campus.
