Music History Talk: “Christophe Colomb” and France's Official Discovery of Darius Milhaud

Event Date:
Monday, October 21, 2013 - 11:00am

TIME & LOCATION: 11am, Bezanson Recital Hall, UMass campus

SPEAKER: Louis Epstein, Lecturer in Music History, UMass Amherst Department of Music & Dance

TOPIC: Today, composer Darius Milhaud is considered a paragon of French musical modernism and interwar musical tastes. Early in his career, French critics maligned his work while his music was warmly welcomed in Germany, France's primary cultural (as well as political) competitor. The height of Milhaud’s German reception came in Berlin in May, 1930, with the world premiere of his grand opera Christophe Colomb. The lecture traces Milhaud’s path to official recognition in his native France and uses Milhaud’s story as the basis for a counter-narrative that complicates traditional assumptions about Franco-German musical antipathy between the two World Wars.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
