Monk on Monk: Celebrating Birthdays and 21st Century Jazz

Program:
Genre:
Date:
Saturday, October 12, 2013 - 4:00pm

Host Bonnie Johnson interviewed jazz drummer, composer, bandleader Thelonious "T.S." Monk III on October 10, 2013 to commemorate the 96th anniversary of the birth of his father, the legendary musician, pianist and composer Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982).

Catch Colors of Jazz for a first-hand account of the elder Monk's work. In a conversation that includes mentoring saxophonist John Coltrane in the living room and the unearthed 1957 Thanksgiving Day recording that featured the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane in concert at Carnegie Hall, T.S. also speaks candidly about the state of jazz from his perspective as co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Thelonious Monk Institute.
