EITHER ORCHESTRA, Tribute to John Tchicai & 27th Anniversary Concert
The Either/Orchestra is one of Boston's leading exports to the international jazz scene, called by Downbeat.com "The best little big-band ever." Appearing from New York, London, Paris and Rome to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the band's resume sports a Grammy nomination and five Boston Music Awards. The ten piece group always puts on an entertaining, hard-grooving and musically thrilling show, and their first appearance at Johnny D's in many years promises to continue the tradition.
The concert will celebrate the band's 27th anniversary (Dec. 17, 1985) and will be a tribute to the great John Tchicai, who passed away at 76 in October. Tchicai, a Congolese-Danish saxophonist who was an important player on the 60s free jazz scene, recording with John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Don Cherry, also recorded one live track with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The E/O collaborated with Tchicai in the 1990's and 2000's, and this show will feature compositions he wrote for the band.
