Historical Treasure in the Heart of Shrewsbury Opens Doors to the Entire Community!
The First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury will hold an Open House on Saturday, September 28 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, as part of the community-wide Spirit of Shrewsbury celebrations. Events will include tours of the historic 1766 Meeting House, as well as a circuit of the larger facility demonstrating all of the recent work that has been undertaken to restore the building's exterior and repair the 200 year old steeple. Designed to dovetail with the Shrewsbury Historical Society's lectures at the hour, there will also be a tour and demonstration of the church's 2 pipe organs and other music instruments given at 10:30 AM and again at 11:30 AM by organist and pianist Malcolm Halliday. At 12 noon there will also be a 15 minute handbell demonstration in the Meeting House with performers from several of the church handbell choirs.
Weather permitting, members of the Intergenerational Community Drumming Group will be performing during the morning on the town green outside the church, and a "town crier" in colonial costume will be on hand to welcome all visitors at the original twin entrances to the Meeting House located at the church steeple. Displays about the many vibrant ministries and extensive outreach services of the church will be on view in the main fellowship hall. Refreshments will also be available. The church is located right off the town common at 19 Church Rd, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
