JazzFest Falmouth - The Tierney Sutton Band

Event Date:
Saturday, October 5, 2013 - 7:30pm

Nominated for three Grammies for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Tierney Sutton wields her clear, silky-smooth voice like an instrument, in a supreme demonstration of her vocal control and interpretive command of America’s greatest music.

The other Tierney Sutton Band members are virtuosos in their own right: Christian Jacob on Piano, Kevin Axt on bass and Ralph Humphrey on drums began performing with Sutton twenty years ago, crafting a unified musical voice, in small clubs in California. They play their richly woven, complex harmonies with a precision that comes only from having worked together for so many years, and the result is deliciously fresh and imaginative.

With nine CDs to their credit, the band has been featured at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, and at the Monterey, Umbria, Marciac and Montreal jazz festivals.

Bloomberg Businessweek described the Tierney Sutton Band’s CD On the Other Side as “eloquent, honest and magnificently sung and played.” The Chicago Sun Times called their CD Desire “a conceptual masterpiece.” Their latest CD, American Road, earned two 2012 Grammy nominations: Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist, for the arrangement of On Broadway. Sutton, who earned Jazzweek’s Vocalist of the Year award, taught in the Jazz Studies department at USC for a decade and is currently vocal department chair at the prestigious Los Angeles Music Academy. Her voice can be heard on many film and television soundtracks, including the Academy-Award nominated film, The Cooler, and in commercials for BMW, Yoplait Yogurt and Coca Cola, among others.

"...soft as silk and smooth as fine bourbon." - CHICAGO SUN TIMES

“top-flight...one and all...Sutton swings effortlessly and then gets out of the way and lets the boys shine. And shine they do...” - L.A. DAILY NEWS
