NEC Jazz Orchestra, Rebirth of the Third Stream
Jazz Studies department chair Ken Schaphorst conducts the NEC Jazz Orchestra in this tribute to the genre reinvention that Gunther Schuller brought to NEC 40 years ago.
The program will include George Russell's "All About Rosie" and Gunther's "Transformation," both of which were performed at the original "Birth of the Third Stream" concert at Brandeis in 1957. Other rarely heard pieces will include Steve Lacy's "Worms," Duke Ellington's "Black" (from "Black, Brown and Beige") as well as Ken Schaphorst's new arrangement of Ran Blake's "Horace is Blue" that will feature Blake playing with the NEC Jazz Orchestra.
Free and open to the public. Go to www.necmusic.edu or call 617-585-1260 for more details.
