Perfect Match – Silent Movies & the Mighty Wurlitzer

Event Date:
Saturday, January 26, 2013 - 1:30pm

Despite the moniker, “silent movies” were never silent.  Music was, and is, an essential part of the experience of attending a “silent” movie, contributing to the atmosphere and giving the audience vital emotional cues that heighten their understanding of the film and its impact on them.

Organist Clark Wilson and Don Phipps, curator of The Hanover Theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer will share their knowledge and insight on this unique and lost art form.  Learn about how film scores were written, the importance of improvisation to heighten the drama on screen, and the status of theatrical organs like the Mighty Wurlitzer.  Gain an interesting perspective on the golden age of movie palaces and the impact they had on America’s cultural heritage.

Clark Wilson, one of the most prominent and recognized scorers of silent films in America, will be playing The Hanover Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer during the silent film comedy "Safety Last" following this talk.

All Access Hanover Lyceum events are free to Hanover Theatre and EMCATOS members. Full price tickets are $10 for the general public.  Please call the box office at 877.571.SHOW (7469) for more information.
