Ray Vega's NY Latin Quintet
Vega is a living legend amongst both Latin Jazz aficionados and straight-ahead jazzers as well. His fiery soloing, spot-on rhythmic accuracy and passionate drive have earned him positions in the groups of Latin Music’s arena of demigods: Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and Mario Bauza. It was Ray Vega who played lead trumpet in three of Tito Puente’s Latin Orchestra’s Grammy-award winning recordings.
Vega is an extraordinary musician with a broad palette. He has performed with the Mingus Big Band, the Joe Henderson Big Band, and was invited to Austrailia to perform as a featured soloist on the Gil Evans/Miles Davis classic treatment of Sketches of Spain and Porgy and Bess. Ray will be performing with his Latin Jazz Quintet, the theme of the concert will be “following in the footsteps of Mongo, Barretto and Fort Apache.”
