Snarky Puppy / Alison Wedding / Maz
The Red Room
With the release of its live, two-disc album/DVD Tell Your Friends, Snarky Puppy has gone from an underground secret to one of the most internationally respected names in instrumental music. The core of the group is now based in Brooklyn and features Grammy Award-winners Robert “Sput” Searight (God’s Property, Snoop Dogg) on drums and Shaun Martin (Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu) on keyboard. Led by award-winning bassist/composer Michael League, Snarky Puppy delivers raw funk and sensitive dynamics, relentless pocket and lyrical melodicism, lush harmony and soulful simplicity, and most importantly, a delicate mixture of composition and improvisation. The three-time Dallas Observer Music Award-winning group (Best Jazz Act 2008, 2009, 2010) fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical- or most carefree- of audiences.
Alison Wedding earned a jazz degree from the world-famous University of North Texas, winning numerous awards (Best Australian Vocal Jazz Album, Gibson-May Award at the London International Vocal Jazz Competition), and performing with artists like Gerry Mulligan and Andy Summers (The Police). Three albums later, Wedding still has a deep passion for teaching voice and improvisation, and is an associate professor in the voice department at Berklee College of Music. Her new album, The Dance, featuring special guests Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke, and Theo Blackmann, has just been released on the brand-new label, GroundUP Music (Ropeadope Records).
Milwaukee native Maz (Mike Maher) began a career as a trumpeter and moved from Texas to Chicago, and eventually to New York. Feeling the need to start composing songs and singing again, as he did in his youth, Maher started Maz in 2009 and was immediately in the studio recording songs. He has worked in a wide range of musical styles and performed and recorded with the likes of Diane Birch, Andrew Rose Gregory (of the Gregory Brothers), the Tickled Pinks, Danny Ross, Jeff LeBlanc, Myron Butler and Levi, and Snarky Puppy. Maz released his debut EP on GroundUP Music in June 2012 and is spending the fall touring in support.
