UMass Amherst Presents String Chamber, Orchestra Concerts

UMass Presents Concerts by Opus One, String Program, All-University Orchestra

 AMHERST (MA) – In November, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Music and Dance will present concerts by the Opus One Chamber Orchestra and students from the UMass String Program coordinated by Elizabeth Chang, and the UMass All-University Orchestra directed by Morihiko Nakahara.

Opus One, the primary string chamber ensemble at UMass Amherst, will present their first concert of the school year on Thursday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Bezanson Recital Hall, located in the Fine Arts Center, 151 Presidents Dr., Amherst, MA. The ensemble is a faculty-student collaboration that includes string faculty Elizabeth Chang, violin; Kathryn Lockwood, viola; Edward Arron, cello; and Salvatore Macchia, bass. Featured works on the November 9 program are Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 9 in C Major and Bartok’s Divertimento. Ticket prices are $10 for the general public, $5 for students, seniors & UMass Amherst employees, and free for UMass students. On Tuesday, November 14, ensembles from the UMass String program will present their annual fall performance featuring works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Shostakovich, and others. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Bezanson Recital Hall, and is free and open to the public. Free parking for concerts in Bezanson is available in nearby University lot 71 off Massachusetts Avenue and lot 62 via Thatcher Way or Stockbridge Road.  Visit the Fine Arts Center website for more information or refer to the UMass interactive parking map.

The UMass All-University Orchestra will perform their first concert with Morihiko Nakahara as conductor on Wednesday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Grace Church, located at 14 Boltwood Avenue, Amherst. The program will include Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Britten’s Simple Symphony, Faure’s Pavane, and Warlock’s Capriol Suite. The concert is free and open to the public.
