World-jazz Ensemble Natraj

Event Date:
Saturday, April 6, 2013 - 4:00pm

“Natraj... playfully intricate... Indian rhythms; hard-driving African grooves; sure-fingered, nuanced tabla; fluid, soaring violin; and emotive raga-based soprano saxophone.” extols India New England. From Boston to Toronto, and Mumbai to Ghana, Natraj has delighted listeners since 1987. Natraj seamlessly melds the classical music of India, traditional music from West Africa, and contemporary jazz to create its own unique and infectious style. www.natrajmusic.com

Acclaimed as Boston’s Best Jazz Band by the Improper Bostonian, Natraj captivates and excites audiences with exotic textures, accessible melodies, and rhythmic energy. “Natraj... exhilarating fusion of contemporary jazz with... Indian and African grooves and techniques,” exclaims The Boston Globe.

In this concert, Natraj features the raga-influenced soprano saxophone of Phil Scarff; the emotive inflections of violinist and violist Rohan Gregory; the warm, nimble solidity of bassist Mike Rivard; the tabla and multipercussion mastery of Jerry Leake; and high-energy groove of drummer Bertram Lehmann.
