The Eric Hofbauer Quintet performs "The Rite Of Spring"

Joining guitarist/composer/bandleader Hofbauer are: Todd Brunel, clarinet and bass clarinet; Junko Fujiwara, cello; Curt Newton, trumpet; and Jerry Sabatini on drums. Hofbauer's quintet arrangements synthesize the most memorable melodic and rhythmic elements from the original score with jazz improvisation. This composition is designated as volume 1 of Hofbauer's Prehistoric Jazz Series (vol. 2 is his arrangement of Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time.")

The Eric Hofbauer Quintet performs His "The Rite of Spring" & "Quartet for the End of Time"

In Razzo Hall

Eric Hofbauer brings his Jazz Quintet featuring Todd Brunel (clarinet), Junko Fujiwara (cello), Curt Newton (drums), and Jerry Sabatini (trumpet) to Clark University.

Inspired by video footage of Leonard Bernstein rehearsing The Rite of Spring in 1987 where he instructs the timpanist to play his part like prehistoric jazz, Hofbauers two recent compact discs feature jazz arrangements of two modernist classics. These are front-and-center of this program: Stravinskys The Rite of Spring and Messiaens Quartet For The End Of Time

Dirty Bourbon River Show

These wonderful madmen play the gospel of New Orleans song, and they preach it loudly on their ninth album, Important Things Humans Should Know (release: April 7, 2015), then taking the word on the road with a four-month U.S. tour.

Switching instruments mid-song, on-stage fireballs, sudden group chants and stomps to catch the audience, they put on a show in a way that’s become a lost art these days. It’s not the shock of the new but the shock of the old, brought back and presented in a new context.
