It was a “global web of agriculture, commerce and industrial production” that ranged from the Americas and Britain to Egypt, Anatolia, India and Brazil. But this was commerce dependent on brutal slavery, staggering social inequality and frightening factory conditions. How did such a system evolve?

Jazz pianist, composer arranger, Mark Shilansky assembled a fabulous group musicians combining horns and guitars and keyboards, piano, bass and drums.

This versatile group performed intricate arrangements that brought out the best of all their many talents. Cool originals filled the barn showcasing the unique combination of piano, keys, horns and guitars, and so much more.

Anat Cohen at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Choro, which means “to cry” in Portuguese, is a genre often referred to as “The New Orleans Jazz of Brazil.” Israeli clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen leads Choro Aventuroso, a culmination of both her affinity and intense study of Choro music as part of an international community of jazz players during her days studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her group will play waltzes, mazurkas and African-Brazilian rhythms such as the Lundu, all of which help characterize the essence of Choro.

Roberts’ new 11-piece ensemble - featuring many of his younger protégé - perform original material by Roberts and the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Chick Corea, and Horace Silver. We speak to Roberts and the members of the ensemble about the formation of the band in Tallahassee, Florida and explore what it means to teach jazz through mentorship.
