Drummer Allison Miller's set is a highlight of this three-day celebration of Women in Jazz, held in May at the Kennedy Center. The band (composed of Marty Ehrlich, reeds; Dan Tepfer, piano; and Todd Sickafoose, bass) plays original music by Miller, as well as "Intermission" by Mary Lou.
In the 1960s - as rock music was changing the pop world - saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Horace Silver and drummer Art Blakey drew bebop, rhythm and blues, and gospel into a powerful small-group sound. Alto saxophonist Wess "Warmdaddy " Anderson and drummer Kenny Washington lead inspired sets in tribute to their soulful predecessors.
