Americana singer-songwriter JAMES MCMURTRY has been around since 1989, when his first album, Too Long in the Wasteland, was released. The album, which was produced by John Mellencamp, marked the beginning of a long and successful career in music. Catherine Russell and Virginia Mayhew

Catherine Russell is a lady born to music. Her father, Luis Russell (1902-63), was Louis Armstrong's orchestra leader beginning in the mid-1930s. Her mother, Carline Ray, is a bassist, singer, great all-around musician and a member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the 1940s all-woman band that swung as hard as the men. "This Daughter of Jazz Is One Cool Cat," reads the headline of Nat Hentoff's profile for The Wall Street Journal.

A Guthrie Family Tribute

2012 is the 100th anniversary of the year of Woody Guthrie’s birth, while October 3, 2012 is the 45th anniversary of Woody’s death. So in tribute we’ll play songs from
Woody and by Woody, along with dozens of Woody covers, as well as recordings from Arlo Guthrie, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, and others. Local artist James Keyes will be a guest in the studio. Be sure to listen at 7PM this Thursday.

Thomas Lauderdale

Pianist Thomas Lauderdale is the co-founder of the celebrated orchestral ensemble Pink Martini, which bridges classical, jazz, world music and old-fashioned pop.

"I'm inching my way towards Liberace land every day," Lauderdale says, laughing after opening with a rollicking take on "Malaguena," composed by Cuba's equivalent of George Gershwin, Ernesto Lecuona.

Donny Hathaway

He was born in Chicago and began as a session musician for Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler & The Staples Singers. His intensity & creativity were recognized from his first solo recording, but his career was cut short by suicide at a young age. Join host Tom Shaker as we celebrate the life and music of Donny Hathaway this week, starting at 7pm.

Jazz Writer

Showcasing some of the finest young players the local Jazz scene has to offer, the band has been conquering the heart of its audiences thanks to its outstanding performances and unique collaborations with international artists.

Mr. Nick & the Dirty Tricks unites veteran musicians Nick David (a.k.a. Mr. Nick), "Lonely" Gus Carlson, Teddy B. (Bukowski) and Rick Rousseau for one of New England's most formidable live outfits in any genre. But their hearts belong to blues.

Real blues. They play elegant, stomping and swinging classics by the likes of Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Wynonie Harris and a mix of original rhumbas, jump blues, and boogies they're developing for a debut album and taking to a growing legion of fans throughout the US and abroad.

Akashic Record

Akashic Record is Boston's premier funk machine. The concept and sound is inspired by the Hammond organ driven grooves of the soul jazz and funk outfits of the 60's and 70's.

Akashic Record is lead by organist Beau Sasser (Al Evans Trio & Melvin Sparks Band) and trombonist Brian Thomas (John Brown's Body, Lettuce, Soulive) and features Jared Sims on baritone sax, Steve Fell on guitar, and Peter MacLean on drums.
