Warren Byrd's Buttonwood Piano Benefit Show

Pianist / vocalist / composer Warren Byrd is a Hartford native with an international touring schedule after many fruitful years playing Jazz throughout Connecticut, Southern New England, and New York. He is performing at the Buttonwood with the Afro-Semitic Experience. With their highly accessible ethnic world music mix and their ability to get an audience on its feet, The Afro-Semitic Experience is emerging on the festival scene and redefining the jazz concert.

An Evening with Joy Ike & Hannah Christianson

Joy Ike has been compared to the likes of Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, and Regina Spektor. Her honest, bittersweet songwriting has earned her the title of Pittsburgh City Paper’s “Best Solo Artist” for four years in a row, the chance to open for a number of national touring acts, and the the opportunity to play festivals such as Lilith Fair, Purple Door, and Calvin College’s Festival of Faith & Music. Her music has turned up on Relevant Magazine’s The Drop, and various NPR affiliates in the northeast.

The Eight Mile River Band

Kirtan with Shubalananda

Come see the group Shubal perform kirtan, a call-and-response type of singing that is performed in certain devotional traditions.

Shubalananda Saraswati (Larry Kopp) has been leading kirtan and singing bhajan for the past 25 years. He is a sadhu, living on the Dakshina (contributions) of the Northeast US kirtan community. He regularly performs with Krishna Das, Dave Stringer, Wah!, Bhagavan Das, and other national kirtan wallahs who come through New England.

Canadian clown Jonathon Ellison reigns from the Montreal School of Mime and The Conway School of Sustainable Landscape Design in Massachusetts. He designs buildings and landscapes that try to sustain life, and performs in different cultures to bring community into the forefront of planning. This lively talk will touch on his design process, but also on the most important work of his life: Clowning For Change.
