Coming up on his 89th birthday, host Dee Dee Bridgewater poses the rhetorical question, "Who in jazz today traveled and worked more than Dave Brubeck?" In the late summer of 2009 alone, he played the Newport, Detroit and Monterey Jazz Festivals. From Newport he opens with a medley by his mentor Duke Ellington, moves on to "Stormy Weather" (it was a beautiful day) and "On the Sunny Side of the Street," and features his men Bobby Militello on sax and flute, bassist Michael Moore, and drummer Randy Jones on "Take Five." Reprising this show, we celebrate this singular artist and his last, long-running group, and say farewell.
