Dr. Daniel Carlat & James Wolcott

Program:
Host:
Date:
Sunday, March 4, 2012 - 9:00pm

Has psychiatry lost its way? DR. DANIEL CARLAT, on the faculty of the Tufts Medical School, believes psychiatry has become too much about prescribing meds and less about sitting and carefully listening to the patient. Many doctors are over prescribing drugs and giving to patients who might be better off merely discussing their problems. Furthermore, the drug companies have far too much influence on which drugs doctors give to their patients. Tune in tonight for an honest assessment of the current state of psychiatry from a doctor in the field. Dr. Carlat’s revealing book is titled UNHINGED: THE TROUBLE WITH PSYCHIATRY-A DOCTOR’S REVELATIONS ABOUT A PROFESSION IN CRISIS.

Armed ONLY with a letter of introduction by Norman Mailer, JAMES WOLCOTT left college and headed for what he hoped would be a brilliant career as a critic in New York City in the early 1970s. As luck would have it, he managed to land an entry position at the Village Voice. Thus began a whirlwind decade for Wolcott as he was introduced into the heady world of the legendary writers who worked in the city during what he calls “the Feudal Age of film criticism”. He becomes one of Pauline Kael’s posse and a regular at CBGB’s and there witnesses the first performances of the likes of Patti Smith and the Ramones. And that’s only the beginning of his story. Today, James Wolcott is long-time columnist and blogger for Vanity Fair, and a well-known critic and fiction writer. Tune in tonight for PART 0NE of our conversation with James Wolcott who talks about his salad days as recounted in his just published fabulous memoir LUCKING OUT: MY LIFE GETTING DOWN AND SEMI-DIRTY IN SEVENTIES NEW YORK.
