Program:
Date:
Sunday, May 18, 2014 - 10:00pm

Listen now to an encore of The Business Beat, Steve Jones-D'Agostino, strategic partner of Susan Wagner PR + Best Rate of Climb, interviews John Creedon Jr. (shown, left) and Dave Peterson (shown, right) of the Worcester  Bravehearts.. They talk about bringing baseball back to Fitton Field. This episode aired originally on November 3, 2013.

After one summer off, baseball is back in Worcester. The newest team in town will take the field in the summer of 2014. "Bravehearts" is the contest-winning name that will be displayed on the uniforms the players wear, at Fitton Field where they’ll play, and in the box scores on the sports pages. (Creedon and Peterson are shown, last fall, wearing “Worcester Baseball” jersery, which was the team’s working name pending the outcome of the naming contest.)

Worcester becomes the second Central Massachusetts community to field a team in the three-year-old Futures Collegiate Baseball League, based in Chelmsford. The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, who play at historic, and newly renovated, Doyle Field in Leominster, are a 2012 expansion franchise.

The Dirt Dawg’s 2013 season swung into action on June 5 with big expectations, but ended on August 8 with those hopes being dashed. Leominster’s team finished in the basement, with a record of 20-31 - 14 games behind first-place the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (38-18).

The Worcester and Leominster FCBL teams are the latest forays by Central Mass. into trying to sustain at least one baseball team at a time. The now-defunct Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League played for eight seasons, from 2005 through 2012.
