KEVIN WHITEHEAD is a well-known writer about jazz and the jazz critic for National Public Radio’s Fresh Air. His new book WHY JAZZ? A CONCISE GUIDE is a marvelous guide to the history and art of jazz in an engaging “question and answer” format. The book begins by answering some of the most basic questions about jazz like “Why listen to jazz?” This guide then proceeds to build into a lively description of jazz in its many forms and discussions of its key players. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves jazz at any level of interest. Tonight, our conversation ranges widely from who made the first jazz recording, to a definition of the art, and from bebop through Coltrane and beyond. Don’t miss this show!

Edith Piaf was one of the great singers and song interpreters of the twentieth century. Yet her life reads like a latter day version of Les Miserables. Described as a Gallic fusion of Billie Holiday and Judy Garland, my guest tonight describes her as more feral than that. She rose above an impoverished and violent childhood and survived the Nazi occupation of France to become a world renown sensation. Tonight, on Inquiry, we talk with teacher, writer and biographer CAROLYN BURKE about her wonderful new biography NO REGRETS: THELIFE OF EDITH PIAF.

Al Dean

Al grew up listening to the music of the 40’s on his father’s EH Scott radio and 78 records. Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman were family favorites. This is first experience in the broadcasting field and allows him to dig into his closet of old vinyls and share them with his audience on the Sunday afternoon edition of the Jazz Matinee.
