WICN 90.5, Jazz Plus for New England in Worcester, and Worcester Public Schools continue their collaboration called Instrumental Partners. The program collects used musical instruments from Central New England residents for the benefit of public school students. "We're approaching 200 instruments donated so far!" said WICN General Manager Tom Lucci.
Instrumental Partners has been active since 2012 in the Worcester area, and now we are expanding the program to Boston. Scullers Jazz Club will act as the drop off center. As instruments are received, they'll be distributed to youth music programs in Greater Boston by a local partner.
On October 30-31, 2015, Bonnie Johnson, host of Colors of Jazz and Marty Friedman of Sunday Jazz Brunch welcomed Najee as an "ambassador" to the program to kick off the launch at Scullers.
"I'm honored to be [ambassador] and happy to do it. Over the years I've probably given away twelve or thirteen instruments like that...So, I'll have to look on my closet too and see what I've got sitting around."- Najee
All instruments are accepted: brass, wind, string, percussion, acoustic, electric, etc.
Worcester Public Schools Performing Arts Liaison Lisa Leach said “We are very excited about this collaboration and putting instruments in the hands of young people who are unable to purchase or rent them, but still have the desire and work ethic to make music an integral part of their developing lives.”
WICN asks people to check their attics, closets and basements for instruments no longer used. “One instrument, placed in the right pair of young hands, could mean everything to that student’s future.” Weston said.
The drop off point for the instruments are:
WICN Studios in the Printers Building
50 Portland Street
Worcester, MA 01608
Scullers Jazz Club
400 Soldiers Field Road
Boston, MA 02134
On November 4, 2015 WICN was recognized by the Worcester Educational Development Foundation for our exemplary contribution to the Worcester Public Schools through our INSTRUMENTAL PARTNERS PROGRAM. WICN's former General Manager, Gerry Weston who started this program in 2012 accepted the award on behalf of WICN.
