Amanda Carr

Executive Director

Amanda Carr officially joined WICN as the Executive Director on May 15th but she's been involved with the station for over 20 years following her first ever interview as a jazz artist. In addition to her music and production background, Amanda brings her sales and marketing knowledge to her role at the station.

Amanda is an international recording and touring artist and 2016 Boston Music Awards Nominee has received worldwide critical acclaim of her fresh interpretations of the Great American Songbook. Her performances include, The Boston Pops (with Keith Lockhart), Michael Feinstein and The Glenn Miller Orchestra. The Wall Street Journal, hails her, “...a true jazz singer in a time of wannabes”. 

While still performing and tapping into her roots of pop, blues, folk & rock with artists like the legendary James Montgomery and Myanna, Amanda has been a guest vocalist with Keith Lockhart and The Boston Pops, The Artie Shaw Orchestra and Harry James Band, among many other guest vocal appearances. A Headliner artist at global jazz festivals, she recorded “Live in San Giorgio” with Trio Martinale in Torino, Italy. Her Portuguese rendition of ‘Mas Que Nada’ labeled her the top 3 Vocalists of in the jazz category in Brazil’s ‘Rio Review’. Amanda created and headlined in the national tour show of  “A Tribute to Peggy Lee” selling out nationwide. 

Among her corporate and commercial work, sheʼs composed music for two PBS documentaries, one being ‘The Story of Golf’ which received an Emmy Nomination, and also acclaim for her musical contributions to ‘Boston Red Sox: 100 Years of Baseball History’. Her original work with childrenʼs music for the  ‘Lilʼ Iguana’ series is among her favorite composing and recording projects. She is the writer and composer for THE BOSTON ANTHEM which has been adopted by major Boston sports teams, corporations, organizations and schools.  Her most ambitious project, a big band album entitled “Common Thread”, debuted on the top of multiple Jazz Best Seller charts and in the top 50 on Billboard. Paying homage to her big band musician parents, Amanda founded ‘American Big Band Preservation Society’ in 2009,  a non-profit (501c3) that preserves the essence of American musical heritage. She was chosen to represent the USA in a music ambassadorship to Shanghai, China in 2014. Currently, she is Artist Liaison for the esteemed organization, ‘Boston Women in Media and Entertainment’ authoring a popular online interview series. From 2012 to 2016 Amanda has been the official commentator for Boston’s prestigious annual “Boston Pops July 4th” concert on the Esplanade with CBS Radio. With 5 jazz vocal recordings, global distribution and airplay, Amanda continues to perform as a solo artist while remaining a popular guest artist. In 2015, Amanda was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from Rotary International.


Darlene Hayes

Membership Director

WICN Public Radio welcomes new Membership Director, Darlene Hayes.  Darlene comes to WICN with a strong background in business development and officially joined #teamwicn in November 2017. Darlene is a proud alumni of Regis College with degrees in Economics/Communications and Marketing/Public Relations. She brings with her a passion and experience with non profits, membership relations, sponsorship development, volunteer management and fundraising skills. Darlene sought out the station as someplace she felt would support her enthusiasm for WICN's music and programming. coupled along with her networking prowess and creativity, Darlene brings her professional experience as a Certified Event Planner (CEP) and Certified Meeting Planner (CMP) to WICN, she has turn keyed small and large scale events for over twenty years for non profits, community organizations,and private clientele that include grassroots fundraisers, professional sporting events, concerts to galas at Gillette Stadium. She has a desire to build upon the station's community outreach efforts and has plans to develop the Membership Experience here at WICN with focus on enhancing WICN's member benefits, creating events, galas, educational partnerships and programs both here at WICN's performance "Studio 50" and in the community to increase WICN's cultural presence in central New England. 

Darlene in her personal life is a wife to Michael and mother of two; Andrew and Melissa who are her absolute pride and joy. She resides in Hopkinton, where she is very active in her community and even co-hosts a local access television show on HCAM called Hopkinton Coffee Break which is a weekly talk show discussing local events and happenings, in 2016 she was the recipient of HCAM's Producer of the Year award. She a member of board of directors of the Hopkinton's Chamber of Commerce, a member of Hopkinton's 2030 economic development committee, the Hopkinton Cultural Council; a local partner of Massachusets Cultural Council and several other organizations within her community and personal interests. In 2015 Darlene was recognized by the MA State House of Representatives for outstanding contributions to her community. When not here at WICN supporting our membership and community outreach initiatives she enjoys time in Wells, Maine and "home at the lake"-Lake Maspenock in Hopkinton with her family and friends. 

Fun Fact about Darlene:  She has never watched a horror movie.


Kate Travaline

Marketing/Admin. Manager

Kate Travaline joined the WICN family in December 2009 as Administrative & Development Coordinator.  She works closely with the General Manager in Underwriting development, marketing communications and administrative duties. A graduate of Villanova University with a degree in Theater/English, Kate attended the Lee Strasburg Theater Institute before beginning a career in Marketing Communications at Eastman Radio in New York City.  She soon joined an upstart company, Screenvision, Inc. and learned the ins and outs of commercial advertising in the Big Apple.  After moving to the Philadelphia area in the late 80’s, Kate worked in the Marketing Department of The PMA Group, working her way from Communications Coordinator to Sr. Writer/Editor.  She brought these skills to Fleer/Skybox, Inc. a division of Marvel Comics, where she wrote and edited licensed entertainment cards which led to her appointment as PR Manager of Entertainment. Kate often volunteers in her community, and as the President of the Uxbridge Education Foundation, she raises monies for scholarships and grants within the schools.  Kate enjoys spending time with her four children, including twin boys, attending baseball games, watching old movies, writing poetry and gardening.

Kate’s musical tastes tend to be more “Against the Grain,” but she’s loving and learning all about jazz and the public radio experience – every day is an adventure!


Michelle Willson

Production & Host

Known to blues lovers across the globe as "Evil Gal" and acknowledged by aficionados of jazz and blues as a passionate and gifted performer, bandleader and songwriter, Michelle has recorded and released 4 critically acclaimed albums for Rounder/Bullseye Records and performed in 18 countries.

Michelle's music is regularly played on jazz and blues radio and internet programs all around the globe and her original music has been featured in the HBO series Mind of the Married Man, as well as on the 2008 House of Blues compilation album Essential Women in the Blues.
Michelle's live performances and recordings have received rave reviews from such respected sources as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Downbeat, The Japan Times, GQ, Jazz Times and Living Blues, in addition to various other publications from many different countries.

Last year, backed up by her solid and incredibly talented band, Michelle recorded a show at one of the world's premier jazz rooms, Scullers, in Boston, MA.  The resulting recording, Fortune Cookie has received airplay from coast to coast and around the world. Michelle recently sang with Dr. John in Boston, MA and performed with her group at The Beaches International Jazz festival in Toronto, Canada.

Michelle is delighted to be back on the air at WICN. From 2006-2009, she hosted Voices of Jazz on Friday mornings and Jazz n' Blue on Saturday afternoons. Accompanied by interesting and entertaining tidbits about the music and musicians, you'll hear your favorite jazz tunes, as well as gems from Michelle's own collection - delightful, obscure material you may not be as familiar with, but you'll love hearing and learning about.

Whether in front of her own band at a live performance or behind the mic in the studio at WICN, Michelle's amazing voice, engaging, intense style, her vast knowledge of and passion for jazz and rhythm & blues music combined with years of experience as a road warrior in the music business add up to a unique, "don't miss this" show!
