Tom Nutile

Jazz Host

Standard Time, 3-6pm, Tuesday

Although a child of the classic era of rock ‘n roll, Tom grew up in a suburban Boston household where the music of his parents – Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman – shared equal billing with the Beatles and Rolling Stones.

As a teenager, Tom dove head-first into jazz, listening to the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, both on LP and on the radio. On nights and weekends he would travel to Boston to play saxophone in a soul/funk band that covered hits by Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament/Funkadelic and the Temptations. Tom also accompanied his father Roy, a band leader, on gigs in Greater Boston, sitting in on saxophone and clarinet. He took over his father’s 15-piece big band 15 years ago, and still leads it, playing big band as well as smaller ensemble engagements throughout New England (

As host of WICN’s Tuesday edition of Standard Time, 3 to 6pm, Tom brings to bear his knowledge and enthusiasm for jazz, the Great American Songbook and the pop, soul and rock he grew up with in the 60s and 70s.
