Celebrate International Jazz Day in Worcester with WICN and WPI!

On April 29, 2017, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) presents a special day commemorating New England’s jazz heritage and its partnership with WICN Public Radio.

From 3:00 to 5:00 PM, a public reception takes place at Alden Memorial Hall on the WPI campus (Institute Road at West Street in Worcester).  Attendees will have the opportunity to meet WICN radio hosts, staff and board members as well as enjoy music from WPI jazz ensembles.  Also, the New England Jazz Hall of Fame will be open for exploration in its new home.

At 7:30 PM at Alden Memorial, the New England Conservatory Jazz Orchestra will perform a concert of Jaki Byard’s jazz orchestra music with special guest Mark Zaleski on saxophone. Jaki Byard’s daughter Diane will sing on Jaki’s arrangement of “God Bless the Child.” This event is also free and open to the public.

Also on April 29, WICN Public Radio in collaboration with WPI, will launch “New England Jazz Stories”, an on-going series focusing on the jazz heritage in New England. The series connects WPI’s Weiss Jazz History Database created by Professor Rich Falco with WICN’s listening community through live broadcasts and interactive content at The April 29 launch will focus on Worcester’s own Jaki Byard, an innovative jazz icon and charter inductee to the New England Jazz Hall of Fame who advanced the language of jazz and influenced generations of emerging jazz artists.
