A Concert of Contemporary Big Band Jazz Music.

Please stop by and hear some very inspired original jazz composition composed by some of the most inspired writers on campus, played by some of the most creative young performers anywhere in the country today. Hailing from all parts of the globe, this international group really exemplifies the great "melting pot" that music can create, especially here at Berklee.

The concert will present world premieres of five new works plus two jazz standards featuring the world renowned jazz tenor saxophonist, “Infant Eyes”, and “Body and Soul”. We might even throw in a Basie chart or two.

This orchestra traditionally plays a concert of  original student jazz compositions each semester, representing the true essence of the jazz tradition at Berklee, to showcase the best talent from the Performance and Jazz Composition Departments. Also the band does play out in the New England area at local jazz clubs and schools. The band did perform to rave reviews at the 2000, 2004 I.A.J.E. convention in New Orleans and New York. In July of 2007 they were featured with McCoy Tyner at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Last April they played to packed houses at the Blues Alley Jazz Club in Wash DC.  Occasionally we have guest artists such as Maria Schneider, Jimmy Heath, Steve Smith, Peter Erskine, Lewis Nash, Bob Mintzer,  Jeff Hamilton, Michel Camillo, Steve Houghton, etc,  play with the band.

The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra (formerly led by Herb Pomeroy), boasts a legendary list of alumni: Allan Broadbent, Mike Gibbs, Ernie Watts, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, John Abercrombie, Mick Goodrick, John Scofield, Hal Crook, Steve Smith, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ingrid Jensen, Antonio Hart, Geoff Keezer, Lionel Loueke, Roy Hargrove, Greg Gisbert, Dayna Stephens, Massimo Biolcati, Avishi Cohen, Annat Cohen, Yuval Cohen, and the list goes on......

Director Greg Hopkins, Professor of Jazz Composition, also teaches trumpet and ensembles at Berklee.  He was on the road with Buddy Rich as musical Director and soloist . Played with  Motown groups  and learned the business while working around the Detroit area and attending Michigan State University in the late 60's.  He has performed with Joe Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Billy Maxted, and others.

In addition to teaching at Berklee, Mr. Hopkins travels all over the world, performing, conducting, and teaching. He recently conducted and performed with the Prague Radio Big Band, The Reykjavik Jazz Orchestra, and every summer directs the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Jazz Program.

His new big band cd, "OKAVONGO", is available on the Summit record label, as is the new quintet cd "QUINTOLOGY". Greg is also a member of the chamber jazz trio "TRE CORDA", with Eugene friesen on cello and led by pianist Tim Ray. In February of 2003, Greg recorded a trumpet concerto with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. Last March he premiered his five movement  orchestral work "Symphonic Spiral" in Skopie, Macedonia.
