In an encore of The Business Beat, Steve D’Agostino interviews Amy Schectman, executive director of Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly. They talk about ending senior poverty and homelessness. This episode aired originally on March 25, 2018.

For more than 50 years, Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly in Brighton has offered housing where older adults of all backgrounds can thrive independently within a supportive environment. At JCHE - a non-profit and non-sectarian organization - seniors enjoy housing that is affordable, safe and supportive - with programs and services that are life-sustaining and life-enhancing. JCHE provides housing where older adults of all backgrounds can age in community – instead of age in place. Its programs and services enable residents to live a full life of connection and purpose.

In 2016, the median age in America reached its highest point ever, at 37.2 years, up from 32.9 years in 1990 and 35.3 years in 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Census 2010. By "median age," the Census Bureau means that half of the American people are now older and half younger than 37.2 years.

As for the 65-and-older population – comprised mostly of aging Baby Boomers – the increase in median age grew faster than most younger-population groups - at a rate of more than 15 percent to more than 40 million people, or 13 percent of the total U.S. population. According to the Census Bureau, the average retirement age in the U.S. is now 62 - and the average life expectancy after retirement is now 18 years.
