In an encore of “The Business Beat,” Steve D’Agostino interviews Ron Charette, executive director of South Worcester Neighborhood Center. They talk about preserving and protecting Worcester’s neighborhoods. This interview aired originally on February 17, 2019.

The purpose of Worcester’s South Worcester Neighborhood Center, which falls under the charitable, non-profit South Worcester Neighborhood Improvement Corporation, is to “provide practical help.” Founded in 1969, the South Worcester Neighborhood Center states four core beliefs:

1. The opportunity for all individuals to shape their own lives lies in practical hope – a realistic understanding of what can be achieved in life.

2. Neighborhoods are much more than buildings, streets, houses, recreation venues, and businesses.

3. Neighborhoods are people – Individuals, families, store owners, service providers, mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, singles, couples, and seniors.

4. An empowered individual brings strength to his or her family, and ultimately to the neighborhood in which they live.

South Worcester Neighborhood Center’s two locations are its headquarters and food pantry at 7 Camp Street, and the Green Island Neighborhood Center at 50 Canton Street. With an annual budget of about $160,000, and a staff of 3.5 full-time-equivalents, South Worcester Neighborhood Center serves about 3,800 individuals a year.

Ron Charette has been executive director of South Worcester Neighborhood Center since 1977. Last  November, Worcester Magazine named Ron one of Worcester’s 2018 Hometown Heroes.
